Welcome, Fix Your Novel participants!

Because you attended Golden May’s workshop, you’re getting a sneak peek at something special: a workbook from Revision Alchemy, my signature editing course that’s about to launch its newest iteration. This excerpt—focused on scenes and chapters—is one of my favorite parts of the course. It dives deep into conflict, tension, and stakes, helping you sharpen your storytelling where it matters most. I’m thrilled to share this with you, and I hope it supports your revision journey with clarity, momentum, and a renewed sense of creative power.

Scenes & Chapters

Scenes are where your story breathes, where characters make choices, tension simmers, and meaning unfolds moment by moment. But crafting scenes with true emotional weight is no small task. Many of us struggle to know when a scene is working, how chapters should begin or end, or what it really means to “raise the stakes.” And when revision feels overwhelming, it’s easy to lose sight of the heart that brought us to the page in the first place.

Through reflective prompts and craft-deepening exercises, you’ll explore conflict, tension, and stakes as emotional anchors for your characters and readers alike. Whether you’re rebuilding a messy draft or fine-tuning a final pass, this guide will help you write scenes that matter.

Meet Your Guide

Hi, I’m Tiffany Grimes

Pronouns: she/they

Not only have I worked with hundreds of writers just like you, on everything from character motivation to deepening themes, working through mindset blocks, plotting, and more, but I’m a writer, too.

I write messy queer characters who take up space, get in trouble, and are already out. I’ve got an MFA in writing, crave stories that delve into the deepest truths, and am obsessed with my cats.

And I’m here to guide you through finishing your draft, brainstorming for your next project, revisions, whatever you need. Because your story deserves to be told.
