BOOK COACHING FOR OFFBEAT WRITERS & CREATIVES

Coaching and strategic story development designed to inspire + transform your writing process

Ready to make waves and stand out in the publishing industry?

We want you to write stories that people need, stories that make readers sit up and take notice. We want you to win awards, sell a ton of copies of your book, and above all be seen. You’ve got big goals, and you know what? So do we.

We know that's easier said than done, but our writers have gone on to win awards, have gotten literary agents and book deals (absolutely can't wait until I'm allowed to announce these!), have gone on to self-publish and receive rave reviews, and have written absolutely gorgeous stories that are completely unputdownable. It's our mission to help other writers break past barriers and see their own potential. To dream big and shatter those glass ceilings.

VALIDATE YOUR STORY IDEA

We’ll start by ensuring your idea isn’t just good—it’s market-ready and book-worthy. But we don’t stop there. We’ll refine your audience targeting, messaging, and key themes to guide you while drafting.

OUTLINE YOUR DRAFT

Say goodbye to sagging middle syndrome. We’ll ensure your plot and structure not only meet but exceed genre and audience expectations.

WRITE YOUR DRAFT

You’ll receive real-time feedback and targeted coaching to support your work, so you’re not just writing in a vacuum, you’re crafting a masterpiece with expert guidance every step of the way.

WE SPECIALIZE IN BOOK COACHING

for the individualists, nonconformists, and trailblazers of the literary world

THE WHOLE AUTHOR APPROACH

We're not just here to help you finalize a manuscript—we're your co-pilots on the extensive journey that follows.

But don't worry, alongside this expansive support, you'll also get what we're best at: making your story not just good, but unforgettably compelling. Because, at the end of the day, we care about more than just a well-written book; we care about the talented individual who wrote it.

Here are a few things we can cover:

Market Analysis: We’ll analyze your manuscript’s potential success in the market and help you to amplify or downplay certain elements of your manuscript in order to provide it the best chance at publication (yes, even if you’re self publishing!) This often means leaning into your own diverse experiences!

Story Craft: We’ll explore the technical bits of writing: plot and story structure, writing authentic characters, pacing, etc. You’ll have all of the tools and resources you need to write an effective and diverse novel that people actually want to read.

Healthy Writing Habits: By the end of our time together, you’ll have sustainable writing habits that work best for you and your life, not some bullshit “ideal” that will never work for you. You’ll also leave with a full outline + a significant chunk of your manuscript written.

Message: We'll work together to clarify and amplify the core messages of your story, ensuring it speaks to the topics and issues that matter to you and the communities you wish to represent.

Get Unstuck: Progress will be tailored to where you are in your writing journey, with a toolkit for conquering perfectionism and 'comparisonitis'—emotional traps that disproportionately affect marginalized writers, especially.

Confidence: You'll gain the confidence to make creative choices, secure in the knowledge that your decisions are enhancing your story, bringing it closer to the heart of your unique perspective, and making a positive impact on diverse readers.

What we believe

We’re on a mission to amplify marginalized voices. We want to see more queer stories, protagonists of color, fat protagonists, stories with Jewish and Muslim characters, characters who come from broken families and low income backgrounds, and stories with disabled main characters on the shelves.

Our clients boast about manuscript improvement, newfound confidence, discovering their unique voices, and conquering creative challenges.

  • Our relationship is a collaborative partnership built on trust, mutual respect, and a shared goal of elevating your writing to its highest potential.

With weekly coaching sessions, we'll dive deep into the essence of your work, addressing both its strengths and areas for growth. Through Voxer support available Monday to Friday, you'll have access to real-time guidance, ensuring that you're never left feeling stuck or uncertain. I'll provide personalized feedback tailored specifically to the story you're writing and your unique publishing goals.

Think of me as a co-pilot on your literary journey, offering both the practical skills and emotional support to help you navigate the complexities of creating and publishing your work.

  • It’s my mission to support marginalized authors in telling stories that are genuine and fit your unique voice. Your storytelling style might not fit westernized standards, and that’s not a bad thing. I’m not going to force you into a tight box. I’m going to provide you with ample room to wander and probe at the what interests you, makes you cringe, confuses you, lights you up, and help you show up authentically human to your writing and your writing process.

As someone who is queer, who grew up in foster care and extreme generational poverty, who has anxiety, depression, and PTSD, I know it’s impossible to shove yourself into a privileged writing lifestyle. We’re still writers even if we have to juggle multiple jobs or sneak writing in on our phones between caring for our loved ones. Our art matters and changes lives by helping others like us feel seen.

  • Certainly! I bring a wealth of experience in mentoring writers who draw from their diverse cultural backgrounds, languages, and life experiences to enrich their storytelling.

I understand the nuance and depth that these elements can bring to a narrative, as well as the unique challenges that come with navigating representation and authenticity.

My aim is to offer insightful, tailored feedback that helps you weave your unique perspectives into your work in a way that resonates with your intended audience. Whether you're incorporating elements of your own culture, exploring language as a storytelling tool, or delving into life experiences that set you apart, you'll find a knowledgeable and supportive guide in me.

  • Absolutely, author mentorship is committed to being accessible and accommodating for writers with disabilities. We've designed our sessions to be as inclusive as possible, with options for video, voice, or text-only communications to suit your comfort and needs. Our Voxer support can be used with screen readers, and we offer transcripts for any audio or video materials provided. We're also open to any suggestions for additional accommodations you may require. Your accessibility is one of our top priorities, and we are continually looking for ways to make our program welcoming and functional for everyone.

  • Navigating systemic biases in the publishing industry is a challenge that we take seriously. We equip you with the strategic know-how to identify and overcome barriers that disproportionately affect writers from marginalized communities.

We provide resources on how to approach publishers who are more open to diverse voices, offer guidance on crafting query letters that highlight the uniqueness of your perspective, and share strategies for leveraging social media and other platforms to build a readership that can catch the attention of decision-makers in the industry.

Our goal is not just to improve your writing, but to help you understand the landscape of publishing today so that you can carve out a space for your voice.

  • I have a master’s in writing for children and young adults and write YA and adult speculative fiction myself. That said, I love working on middle grade, YA, and adult fiction, memoir, and non-fiction. I’ve studied psychology and getting inside the minds of characters and how they propel the story forward is where I thrive. I also love supporting writers at all stages, from idea to submission.

The genres I love the most are contemporary, literary, sci-fi, fantasy, historical, romance, paranormal, gothic, horror (not slashers/gore), magical realism, self-help, business, and memoirs. I particularly love genre bent stories that blend multiple genres.

I’m not a good fit for misogynistic, racist, or homophobic novels, screenplays or plays, picture books, chapter books or early readers, graphic novels, or gore/slashers.

  • I have over 15 years of experience as an editor and writer. Here’s a snapshot of my credentials:

Since starting Burgeon, I’ve had the privilege to work with over 100 writers and have seen a wide array of challenges and triumphs, and I am able to tailor my guidance to each individual’s needs.

I hold a BA in English Literature from Flagler College (minors in Creative Writing and Psychology) and a MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Hamline University. This ensures that I bring both scholarly depth and a multi-genre approach to our sessions.

As the managing editor of FLARE: The Flagler Review and President of the Alpha Epsilon Omega Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society, I honed the skill of curating and editing compelling stories.

I’ve previously volunteered as a mentor for Query Connection, RevPit, and the Minnesota Prison Writing Workshop, and I have recently been a reader for The Passed Note, an intern at Literary Arts, and the blog editor for The Storyteller’s Inkpot. This volunteer work is my way of giving back to the community and staying updated on the latest trends and challenges in the industry.

My own writing has been published in Feels Blind Literary, Meat for Tea: The Valley Review, Microfiction Monday Magazine, The Fiction Pool, Herstry, Sad Girls Club, and Ruminate Magazine.
